Reader To Reader Awarded Grant From Verizon Foundation

Amherst, MA – February 25, 2005 – Amherst-based literacy organization Reader To Reader, Inc. has been awarded a $1,000 grant from the Verizon Foundation to support its work in bringing books to schools in the Pioneer Valley.

The Verizon Foundation has identified literacy, workforce development, and community technology deployment as priority areas for community investment.  In addition to support for Reader To Reader, Verizon partners include the Massachusetts Department of Education and Mass INC.

“We are so pleased to have the Verizon Foundation support our Massachusetts Inner City Book Project, which currently serves 19 Western Massachusetts schools, many located in inner-city Springfield and Holyoke,” says Reader To Reader’s executive director David Mazor.  “Every week we are delivering hundreds of books to these desperately under-resourced schools.  It is a resource lifeline made possible by the Verizon Foundation’s support of literacy initiatives.”

Reader To Reader, Inc. is a public charity that brings books free of charge to under-resourced school libraries across the United States.   The award-winning organization serves over 150 schools in 26 states by recycling used books that are in top condition so that they can find new homes in school libraries.
