Dear Friend of Reader To Reader,

I hope you enjoy this newsletter about the Reader To Reader Book Project. Our success is very much due to your donations of books, postage money, and most of all your generous spirit. Please forward this newsletter and help us spread the word.

One Million Books and Counting!

I am so pleased to report that on this one year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina that we have collected, sorted and shipped over one million books to rebuild library resources in Louisiana and Mississippi. These books have not only benefited school libraries but have also gone to daycare center, public libraries, outreach literacy programs, and a host of other programs in need of books. These books have come from all over the country (with a special tip of the hat to the Springfield Kiwanis Club for their Herculean effort) and have truly meant that our nation (and Canada) have come together to respond to the unprecedented devastation wrought by this hurricane. Bravo to you, the book donors, for making this possible.

One of the more interesting success stories we have had is our response to the loss of the Japanese book collection at Dillard University in New Orleans. We are so glad to have played a small role in helping rebuild their Japanese-language resources.

Dear Mr. Mazor,

On behalf of the Louisiana Association of Teachers of Japanese, I would like to express our deepest appreciation to you for your very generous help. I would like you to know that Ms. Lastrapes notified me that she received four boxes of books from you. Three boxes are the Journals of Asian Studies and one box contained various books on Japan. It was so nice of you doing this for us. I will attend ACTFL (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages) and I will officially express our appreciation to you and your organization for your generous support for us at the meetings of the Association of Teachers of Japanese and National Council of Teachers of Japanese at the conference.

I hope that more people should know about your organization's good intention, and that more people will donate books on Japan for school libraries and public libraries, where all books were lost. I hope you don't mind my making the announcement.

Thank you so much again,

Sincerely,

Masako Dorrill

Just one small part of our Hurricane Katrina relief effort. Our work goes on!

In other news, we are so pleased to be featured in this month’s Family Circle Magazine as the place to send your “beloved but no longer read children’s books you’re keeping for sentiment.” We second the motion. We will give them good homes for sure!

We were also featured in this month’s Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine. Ellery Queen donated a full-page add to advise their readers to send their mystery, sci-fi, and fantasy novels our way. Hooray for Ellery Queen.

That’s all for now.

Until next month,

Sincerely,

David Mazor
