Dear Friend of Reader To Reader, I hope you enjoy this newsletter about the Reader To Reader Book Project. Our success is very much due to your donations of books, postage money, and most of all your generous spirit. Please forward this newsletter and help us spread the word. One Down 8.3 Million to Go We received our first copy of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" the other day and it got me thinking about the 8.3 million copies that were sold in the first 24 hours. Most of those have been read and are sitting on bookshelves. Wouldn't it be nice to share your copy with a child anxiously waiting to read it? If you have a copy that you are walking by every day, please send it our way and we will give it a very good home. Announcing the Mississippi Rural Library Initiative This is it! This is the big one! All summer we have been working out the details for our newest initiative aimed at boosting the resources at Mississippi's poor rural community libraries. Now, we are pleased to announce the launch of the Mississippi Rural Library Initiative, a pilot program aiding 20 of the poorest community libraries in Mississippi. The towns served include: Belzoni, Isola, Macon, Brooksville, Shuqualak, Kosciusko, Carthage, Duck Hill, Durant, Goodman, Kilmichael, Lexington, Pickens, Tchula, Walnut Grove, West, Winona, Louisville, Charleston, and Tutwiler. The first shipment has already been received and here is the response. "Wanted to let you know that we are having Christmas in August! It is hard for me to express how happy that we are to be a part of your organization. As Martha Stewart would say, "It's a good thing." Reader To Reader makes a big difference. Thanks and we look forward to our next shipment." --Shirley Keenum, Director Humphreys County Library The problem is that small libraries, especially those located in rural areas feel the ever-rising cost of library materials. The community libraries in Belzoni and Isola, for example, only have $800 a year for new books. That doesn't go very far when the average book price for adult fiction titles is $26.83 while non-fiction titles have escalated to $42.32. You can help. Every month we will be shipping these community libraries hundreds of books. They need recent fiction and nonfiction bestsellers, books on health issues (especially diabetes), landscaping, home decorating, remodeling, children's play areas, Southern or African-American interest, cookbooks, World War II, Korean War and Vietnam popular non-fiction, Crafts including holidays and holiday cooking/entertaining, and books for children of all ages. All books should be in great shape and both paperbacks and hardbacks are welcome. Your support is critical. Don't let that bestseller sit on your shelf! Send it our way. The Word is Out Dear David, Word is out! You are a miracle man. Thank you ever so much! Mary Kay Dunleavy Marcus Garvey School Chicago, IL What a nice compliment, but the truth is that Reader To Reader is made possible by a team of over 20 volunteers and college work study students. They sure make me look good, but it is a team effort from start to finish! Donate via credit card online.
