Dear Friend of Reader To Reader,

I hope you enjoy this newsletter about the Reader To Reader Book Project. Our success is very much due to your donations of books, postage money, and most of all your generous spirit. Please forward this newsletter and help us spread the word.

5,000 Books! We're Off And Running!

We are off to a fast start this school year in western Massachusetts with deliveries of more than 5,000 children's books so far this month to schools in Springfield, Holyoke, Chicopee and West Springfield. The need is great; Springfield ranks sixth worst in the U.S. for the percentage of children living in poverty. In 2006, 44.6 percent of Springfield children lived below the poverty line; a number that is growing due in part to the increasing immigrant population. That number is three times the Massachusetts state average and more than twice the national rate.

Among our recent Springfield area deliveries were more than 900 brand-new science workbooks for Patrick E. Bowe Elementary in Chicopee.

Here is a note from them.

"I would like to thank you for the generous donation of science books to Patrick E. Bowe Elementary. This will provide many students with the opportunity to put them to use with our new enrichment programs recently implemented in the school day. Again, thank you for the generosity and thinking of our students."

Happy Students On The Navajo Reservation

Hello David, The year is starting with lots of books thanks to you and your wonderful organization. I received several boxes from you this past week. We have processed them and everyone can't wait for the next box to arrive. The paperback classics are all collected in a turning display. The new "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" is already checked out. Many students wanted the books before we could get them processed through the system.

Thanks for all you do!

Sincerely,

Carla Clauschee Navajo Pine High School

The Reader To Reader Team; They Work And Study

In addition to our dozen dedicated community volunteers, the heart of the Reader To Reader team is made up of six Amherst College work-study students; Heather, Meredith, Joyia, Emmy, Kat and Samantha. In addition to their demanding academic studies, these very gifted students work all semester long sorting and packing books. They hail from Alabama, California, Maine, North Carolina, Massachusetts and Washington, and they all bring a vitality and insight that helps our program succeed. Come by and drop off some books and meet our hard-working student staff.
